I like this concept a lot. You basically have these participating radio channels from all over (though the current partners are mostly from Europe… my old stomping grounds, Montreal’s CKUT, just added themselves to the mix) – the radio channels all contribute their art sound content to this common project, Radia.fm. It’s a beautiful challenge for radio producers because of the limits of spoken languages in these countries.
Have a listen here (you’ll hear the tail-end of another show as radia starts).
But what constitutes as sound art? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Why aren’t we drawn to sound art? (aside from the obvious, “but we are a visual culture!”)…
It’s hard for people to get sound art, or even to take time to listen because it’s not as accessible as visual culture is. But sound engages a different part of your brain, and you can rest your weary eyes and just let it passively take you into its world. Plus you get samples from Berlin, New York and Austria shows. I think this is a great thing to listen to while you try to nap because a lot of people fall asleep in front of the TV (including me but it’s my laptop) and this is much healthier. Check out Radia.fm.
